Hannah Hornbeck
Hi! I'm Hannah Hornbeck, a high school art teacher who loves working with students to enhance creativity. I create artwork of my own, seen in the slideshow, and love teaching art. In my free time, I love spending it exploring new places and spending time outside with my boyfriend. One of my favorite places to go in Kansas City is the Crossroads, with all the lively art and restaurants that are down there (especially on First Fridays). In our free time, my boyfriend, family, and I volunteer for Ray-Pec Special Olympics; a program that is so enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved. My love for art and working with kids of all ages and skill levels inspires me daily to be the best teacher possible.

Philosophy for Education
As someone who wishes to be a high school art teacher someday, I would define my educational philosophical stance as that of social reconstructionism. I value change in the world and a proactive society that nourishes change. I would coach the students rather than constantly lecture because I believe that knowledge is always changing and is individualized to each student. Knowledge can be used to create change and be proactive, especially through art, to change the world. My curriculum would consist of exploring cultural differences and celebrating diversity through various art forms.
Some teaching strategies that I would implement in the classroom would be giving demonstrations of my own, along with using videos online for the class to watch. This would help with visual and auditory learners. I would also allow the class to experiment and test different materials such as charcoal, graphite, oil pastels, clay, etc., allowing for the tactile and kinesthetic learners to thrive. I would love to go on a field trip at least once a semester to a nearby art museum and have the students pick out a favorite piece of artwork and explain why using art vocabulary terms. Going to an art museum would also allow for the students to view the art of different cultures and eras for their own, in the real world, showing how it has changed through time and is still changing today.
